Brith Sholom Synagogue, 68 St. Philip Street

Brith Sholom Synagogue, 68 St. Philip Street
Brith Sholom was organized in 1854 by Charleston’s Orthodox Jews, who held their first meetings in a building rented from John Francis, a barber and the first person of color to own real estate on this block of St. Philip Street. In 1874, the congregation began construction of this synagogue, where it met until 1954 when Brith Sholom merged with Congregation Beth Israel on Rutledge Avenue. This photo was taken circa 1900.
