St. Philip Street, circa 1970s
Clearing the site for the Simons Center for the Arts. The houses that were on 56 St Philip (foreground) and 58 St. Philip (center) have already been demolished. Still standing are 62 St. Philip and three of the six tenement houses built along McBride’s Lane in 1887. They are visible behind the construction site, against the back of the Downtowner Motel (now College Lodge). The tenement houses and 62 would soon be taken down.
