The institute’s backers bought a lot at 58 St. Philip where they erected a new building on the site of a “two-story brick building on a high brick foundation” that was the residence of Dr. John Grimké before the Civil War. In 1964, the College bought the Jewish Community Center and rented it to College Preparatory School. Courtesy of College of Charleston Libraries, Special Collections.
