Luden, a merchant, constructed this stucccoed brick building as a corner store with residence above. Part of a lot that originally extended to King Street, running 440 feet through the block, this site had been used by grocers and tavern keepers for decades. Behind the store, along a path on the south side of the property, known as McBride’s Lane, stood a row of tenement buildings. Courtesy of Historic Charleston Foundation Archives.
