83 Broad Street

Originally constructed in 1896, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of South Carolina has adjudicated federal law within the state for over a century and notably was the site where Judge Waring offered his influential dissenting opinion in the Briggs v. Elliott case, in which he argued in favor of school integration -- an opinion that would in turn inform the  landmark decision against segregation by The Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education just two years later.  Courtesy of the Lowcountry Digital Library.
