J. Waties Waring

J. Waties Waring
In spite of the fact that he grew up under the tutelage of his father, who was a Confederate veteran, J. Waties Waring went on to become one of the most vociferous advocates for civil rights in South Carolina.  In the aftermath of publishing his dissenting opinion against the decision made in Briggs v. Elliott, in which he called for desegregation, he and his wife were threatened with violence and ultimately decided to flee from his hometown.  He only returned twice:  once to celebrate the Brown v. Board of Education ruling and finally to be buried.  Courtesy of the South Carolina University of South Carolina, Special Collections.
