East Side Neighborhood

East Side Neighborhood
This composite of 1888 Sanborn fire insurance map sheets show how the East Side neighborhood continued to grow during the late 1800s. Although considered predominantly white at its establishment in the 1760s, nearly all of the East Side’s residents were African Americans by the end of the 1800s. With a larger population came more development. Churches, businesses, education centers, and other establishments continued to open in the East Side. Courtesy of the Library of Congress.
