Since 1933, the Cistern has served as a stage for the College’s annual spring commencement. In this photo from the early 1940s, both graduates and faculty could fit on the cistern. To support larger graduating classes, a stage is now constructed over the cistern, and faculty are seated with the audience in Cistern Yard.
