This house was purchased in 1844 by a free woman of color, Sally Johnson. The house was passed down through Johnson’s descendants, the Bell family, until the College purchased it in the 1970s. Following this purchase, the College found an important historical document in the attic: a volume containing minutes of the Brown Fellowship Society, a benevolent organization for free people of color.
