The Charleston branch of the NAACP was deeply involved in legal challenges to Jim Crow segregation which prevailed throughout the South, but it also functioned as a community center that served to knit together African Americans across the city -- which was crucial for fostering the community activism that was undoubtedly the driving force of the civil rights movement.
