W.E.B. DuBois

W.E.B. DuBois
Prior to the establishment of a local branch in Charleston, co-founder of the NAACP W.E.B. DuBois -- seen in the middle of the group with his hands collapsed together -- visited Charleston to determine whether the city would be an effective place to pursue the group’s civil rights agenda. He ultimately decided that it was and delegated the task of organization of the local branch to Charleston native Edwin A. “Teddy” Harleston, seen standing at the far left of the group. Afterwards he would serve as the president for the branch. Courtesy of the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture.
