Portion of petition Charleston NAACP presented to Charleston City Board of School Commissioners, who did not grant this request. In response, members of the NAACP, including Septima Poinsette, collected signatures from over 4,500 Charlestonians, demonstrating that a majority of Black households wanted Black teachers in their schools.
