J. Arthur Brown

J. Arthur Brown
By the mid-twentieth century, J. Arthur Brown had assumed the position of president for the group and led the Charleston branch in its campaign to ensure equal treatment under the law for African Americans throughout the city and the state. His involvement in the Gretta Middleton integration case is just one example of his fearless advocacy for civil rights. He continued to work toward realizing his aspirations until his death in the 1980s. Courtesy of College of Charleston Libraries, Special Collections.
